The Healing Power of Manuka Honey: Antibacterial, Antifungal, Antiviral!
A few winters ago GPs were recommending that instead of taking antibiotics, people first soothe coughs and boost immunity naturally with honey, which may be added to almost any recipe for natural sweetening.
The queen of all honeys heralds from Australia and New Zealand, produced by bees that pollinate the native manuka bush. The manuka flower blooms for 2-6 weeks of the year, with individual flowers extremely sensitive to weather and climate and open for only five days. Given that bees must take about 20,000 trips to the manuka flower per honey jar, producing large volumes of manuka honey in the right conditions requires a high degree of care, precision and effort from the bees and beekeepers.
Manuka honey is known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Most famously, the honey is used to heal wound infections and as a measure to prevent and treat cancer!
According to a study undertaken in the UAE, manuka honey was found to inhibit growth of cancer cells while reducing the toxicity of traditional cancer medicines (alleviate chemotherapy side effects). In another study, intravenous administration of manuka honey improved host survival after chemotherapy on mice with tumours.
Such properties stem from a high concentration of methylglyoxal in the nectar of manuka flowers. Unlike regular honey, this compound is derived from the conversion of dihydroxyacetone and comes in more substantial quantities than honey from alternative nectar sources.
Since some cancers result from bacterial infections, research suggests that manuka honey’s antibacterial properties support the recovery of this kind of cancer sufferers. Cancer also results from oxidative stress, whereby there is an imbalance of antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Darker honeys, such as manuka honey, have higher concentrations of phytochemicals, which studies show reduce DNA damage from free radicals and restore a healthy balance.
